I met this couple at our local home show last spring. They were looking for a high-tech, energy-efficient home with a universal design. The home is built on a radiant heated slab with no exterior steps, with wide halls and doors, and rooms designed for total wheel chair accessibility. The floor plan provides area for a future partial or full-time care giver.
Enter the home from a covered porch into a spacious room with high ceilings showing the library loft at the top of the open staircase. From their chair recliners these homeowners can enjoy a wide screen television, gas fireplace, outdoor view, and the grandeur of their new home.
The master suite wing has its own fireplace, big screen television, his and hers bathrooms, walk-in and additional closets, exercise room with a desk area, and access to the covered patio, all universally designed. The garage was designed to accommodate a van with a side wheel chair lift.
This home is built within a pine forest, so passive solar was not feasible. We focused our efforts on a high level of conservation and energy-efficient design to provide the comfort and convenience this couple deserves.
